Mongolia Day 7 (Heading Home)

Today was all about flying back to the capital. We made it to UB by about 3pm. We hung out until 8pm when we met our guide for dinner and drinks. He brought a friend of his. We all went to a beer garden and some live music. The music was good but they only played 1 set. I thought that was a bit odd.

Mongolia Day 6 (Making our way back) Today we started off early in hopes of spotting some of the wildlife. It worked. About 1 hour out we started seeing a few white tailed deer. They are much smaller than what we in the US call white tailed deer. Later in the day we saw a few herds of gazelle. The only way to get close enough to see them is with a jeep. Man those things are fast! As soon as we got close enough to see them we would let them be. We didn’t want to waste too much of their energy on our account. (more…)

Mongolia Day 5 (The Dunes

Mongolia Day 5 (The Dunes) Best day so far!! We started out by heading to the dunes. We drove to a family’s ger about 2k from the base then walked to the dunes. Then we set out to climb the biggest dune in the area. It turns out it’s the biggest in the Gobi. This thing is huge. I find it mind boggling that nature can pill sand so high and steep. I’m told it’s about 700m tall. As we climb to the top I find some of the sand packed tight. If you walk carefully enough you can stay on top of the sand. (more…)

Mongolia Day 4 (The long drive) What a long day!!!! We started the day slow. I woke up about 7am and noticed the light coming in the window at the top of the ger was orange. I guessed there was a good sunrise so I got out of bed “COLD” and stuck my head out the door to take a look. It was a really good sunrise all though I don’t have many to compare it with. I think I’ve seen maybe 5 in my life. (more…)

Mongolia Day 3 (Getting to the Gobi) It’s our first full day in the country side. I’m sitting on a hill top in the middle of the Gobi desert, watching the sun set while writing this entry. With the wind up here it’s cold but the colors are so pretty. As I look towards the setting sun I see yellows and reds. As I turn to the right I see rose and purple. The yellow is changing into orange. (more…)

Mongolia Day 2 (UB)

Mongolia Day 2 (UB)

Today we spent the day at the capital. We started by going to a few museums. It was interesting see all the animals native to Mongolia. I was shocked how many of them looked just like the animals in the states. Again it seems more like Wyoming than Asia. Later we went to a monument built by the Russians calls “friendship” at the top of a nearby hill. As we walked up the wind started to blow. WOW, It was about to blow us off the hill. It’s a lot colder than I expected. At night we went to a cultural show. I got to hear “Throat singing”. Real Cool! Throat singing is where they produce 2 or 3 distinct tones at the same time. As I listened and saw for myself, I still had a hard time believing one person could make that set of sounds all at once.

Mongolia Day 1 (Getting t

Filed under: Mongolia, photos — dugsworld @ 12:00 am

Mongolia Day 1 (Getting to Mongolia) The day started off with a phone call from Ganesh saying “my bus is going to be 3 hours late to the airport.”. I’m sure everyone who knows Ganesh will be shocked. Ganesh switched from the bus to the train and gets to the airport in time to catch the plane. As we find our seats on the plane we find we (The 2 biggest guys on the plane) are in the smallest seats on the plane. (more…)
